Lares Trek Machu Picchu 4 Days

Day 1Cusco – Lares Hot Springs – Cuncani – Sondor

At an average of 5:30am, we will pick you up from your hotel in our private tourist vehicle. During the trip we will make a stop in the Sacred Valley (2800m) for breakfast. Then, we will continue in the same vehicle to the town of Lares (3250m) where we will pass by the Lares Hot Springs where we will have a relaxing moment (average temperature of 28º and 34ºC).

Afterwards we will depart to the village of Cuncani (3700m) where we will start walking discovering the granite and andesite mountains, after 2 to 3 hours of walking we will arrive at the lunch point where the landscape is welcoming, finishing lunch we will walk 2 more hours to our camp in Sondor (3900m).

A place where its warm people welcome us, they will introduce the members of their family, and they also have the ability to transform alpaca wool into a colorful and well-finished textile product.

  • Walking time: 4 – 5 hours in cold weather.

Day 2: Sondor – Huacahuasi Pass – Auroray Cocha – Yurac Cocha – Pucara

After an early morning breakfast, we take a 2-hour path that is not very common for hikers, heading towards the Huacahuasi Pass (4700m). It is the highest point of the hike and it shows us a sign of snow that makes it even more attractive to reach the top.

While we observe its natural appeal, we will pass by two lagoons known as Aruray Cocha and Yurac Cocha (where we stop for lunch). After lunch we will pass through the Queuñas forest (Polylepis), which will allow us to discover the flora (orchids, bromeliads and other species) and fauna (birds) that develop at more than 3’600m.

Our camp is located in the Pucara sector (3’000m), where we can discover the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

Walking time: 7 – 8 hours in cold weather.

Day 3:Pucara – Ollantaytambo – Aguas Calientes

After breakfast, we take the road through the Sacred Valley of the Incas to Ollantaytambo at 2’850m (Ollantaytambo is considered the last village of the Incas).

Here we discover the Inca village of Ollantaytambo and the Pinkulluna sector (Sr. Tunupa). After lunch, we take the train to enter the town of Aguas Calientes (2’050m). Hotel night in Aguas Calientes.

Hiking time: 3 hours in cold weather

Note: the entrance to the town of Aguas Calientes may vary according to the availability of train tickets, which may be a 12:58 pm or 7 pm train.

Day 4Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco

After breakfast, at 5:30 am, we take the tourist bus to go up to Machu Picchu. At 6am, we visit the citadel of Machu Picchu (2400m), a place that will enrich us with its history and culture, in harmony with nature. Then you will enjoy the tranquility, in your free time, before returning to the town of Aguas, and taking the train to Ollantaytambo.

From Ollantaytambo we continue by bus to the city of Cusco (3350m). The climate in Machu Picchu is warm with mosquitoes.

  • Breakfast on the 1st day excursion and lunch after the visit to Machu Picchu (4th day)
  • Sleeping bag (If you do not have this, we offer it at a cost of USD 20.00 for the trip)
  • Bus ticket down: Machu Picchu – Aguas Calientes after the tour (this has a cost of USD 12.00)

What do I need to bring?

  • Backpack with rain shelter
  • Clothing for warm and cold climate like a waterproof jacket
  • Rain pants and lightweight pants
  • Trekking shoes.
  • Slippers or sandals (for showers and hot springs)
  • Woollen or synthetic socks and a sweater
  • Long- and short-sleeved polo’s/T-Shirts
  • Rain poncho and a hat
  • Bathing suit (for the hot springs in Aguas Calientes)
  • Sunscreen, insect repellent, disinfecting alcohol and gel, water bottle and sterilizing tablets, toiletries and toilet paper
  • Camera (wrapped in plastic bag), a flash light and batteries
  • Some snacks like chocolate bars and dry fruit
  • Original passport, original ISIC student card and extra money in soles
  • Since the weather can be very cold and moistly, your clothes – once gotten wet – won’t dry at night. So take some clothes to change
